چکیده

In comparison with atmospheric boundary-layer winds, which are customarily treated as stationary, gust-front winds such as a thunderstorm/downburst exhibit strong nonstationarity. In storms characterized by a gust-front, wind speed changes rapidly during a short time period. In order to realistically describe attendant loads effects, a new analysis framework is presented which is named the gust-front factor (GG-F) approach. The gust-front factor, akin to the gust loading factor in boundary-layer winds which has world-wide acceptance in codes and standards, is introduced and can be utilized in conjunction with the existing design standards. The GG-F based approach encapsulates both static and dynamic characteristics of gust-front wind effects on structures through the following features that distinguish them from conventional boundary-layer flows: variation in the vertical velocity profile; dynamic effects induced by the sudden rise in wind speed; non-stationarity of turbulence in gust-front wind; transient aerodynamics.

Physical and numerical modeling of downburst generated gust fronts

This paper presents three different schemes for modeling and analyzing the effects of gust fronts resulting from downbursts on structures. These schemes include: (i) the utilization of a manually controlled, pivoted flat plate that can be rotated to a high angle of incidence in a traditional low speed wind tunnel facility to mimic the kinematics and dynamics of a gust front and to quantify thei...

Modeling and Simulation of Transient Wind Load Effects

Notwithstanding the developments made in recent decades in wind effects on structures, there is a need to revisit the current paradigms and to look for improved understanding concerning the nature of wind field, associated aerodynamics and the resulting load effects in light of the emerging themes: non-stationarity/non-homogeneity/transient wind events; mechanical/convective turbulence; unstead...

On the formulation of ASCE7-95 gust effect factor

Highlights of the formulation of the gust effect factor in recent revisions of the wind load provisions in ASCE7-95 are presented. The revised wind map is based on 50-year peak gust speeds in contrast with fastest mile speeds used in ANSI/ASCE7-93. The concepts of spatial and temporal averages are discussed, and the new gust effect factor (GEF) is introduced with its derivation detailed. Exampl...

Evaluation of 2-D Aeroelastic Models Based on Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method in Flutter and Gust Response Determination

Two 2-D aeroelastic models are presented here to determine instability boundary (flutter speed) and gust response of a typical section airfoil with degrees of freedom in pitch and plunge directions. To build these 2-D aeroelastic models, two different aerodynamic theories including Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) have been employed. Also, a 3-D aeroelastic framework ...
